Traveling to Camp

Directions: Camp Sylvester is located just off State Highway 108, in Pinecrest, CA. Camp is a year-round high Sierra destination, approximately 35-minutes east of Sonora, CA.

Winter Travel: Camp Sylvester is located at an elevation of 5,600’ above sea level. The Highway and local roads in Pinecrest to Camp are generally well maintained for winter travel. Be advised, roadway snow plowing is typically provided 6:00AM to 9:00PM. When it is actively snowing, 4-Wheel Drive or tire snow chains are typically required.


Facility Quick Guide

  1. Quiet hours are 10:00PM - 7:00AM.

  2. Portable speakers, fireworks, and candles are not allowed.

  3. Service animals are welcome; this does not include pets and emotional support animals. All service animals must be leashed and immediately attended to by owner, well-behaved, and cleaned up after.

  4. Be aware of bears and other local wildlife. Keep doors closed, do not leave food and trash outside, or in vehicles.

  5. Beer and wine are welcome, must be minimum 21-years of age; hard liquor and spirits are not allowed on the grounds.

  6. Controlled substances and weapons are not permitted to be on the grounds, including but not limited to, firearms and knives.

  7. Smoking or vaping is not permitted on the grounds.

  8. Limited use Wifi is provided. Access code is provided to event leader only. General use of Wifi is typically not available to guests. Verizon provides cell coverage to Camp Sylvester.

  9. Camp Sylvester is not responsible for lost or stolen personal property.

  10. There is a general store in Pinecrest, open daily, year-round. Approximately 1/2 mile from Camp Sylvester.


What to Bring

Some items to consider bringing to be best prepared for an enjoyable stay.

  1. Personal Bedding: A sleeping bag and pillow; or twin sized fitted sheet, flat sheet, blanket, and pillow. Camp Sylvester does not provide bedding, nearly all beds at Camp are twin sized.

  2. Personal Toiletries: Tooth brush, tooth paste, bathing towel, wash cloth, shower sandals, hair care products, hair dryer, deodorant, shaving supplies, skin lotions (toilet paper, hand soap, and generic hair/body wash is provided).

  3. Appropriate Clothing: Camp Sylvester is located in the high Sierra, elevation of 5,600’ above sea level. With a summertime fresh water recreation lake within walking distance, and winter snow conditions. Bring personal clothing for your entire stay, laundry facilities are not provided. Consider bringing a plastic bag for dirty laundry. Waterproof shoes and water resistent pants are highly recommended in winter snow (i.e. jeans and cotton clothes absorb water).

  4. Flashlight: Although a flashlight is not required while on the grounds, a personal use flashlight is recommended.

  5. Insect Repellent: It is recommended each guest bring insect repellent for personal use during spring/summer seasonal site visits.

  6. Personal Water Bottle: All facet water is drinkable, it is recommend to stay well hydrated. Do not drink/consume water from irrigation hoses.


First Aid & Safety

  1. For medical emergencies first call 911. Emergency phone is located in the main kitchen of Chance Hall. Then notify Camp Staff immediately of on-site emergencies.

  2. The office has a limited supply of first aid supplies. Guest groups are responsible to providing their own first aid equipment for guest use.

  3. An AED is located within the Chance Hall dining room.

  4. Local firehouse is located 1/2 mile from Camp.

  5. Nearest hospital is located in Sonora, CA, a 40-minute drive from Camp.

  6. All sleeping cabins are equipped with a smoke and CO2 detector.

  7. Fire extinguishers are provided throughout Camp.
